Home appliances cause 15,000 accidental fires a year in England, and there are big brand names in charge. Daily household appliances caused 15,000 accidental fires in homes across England between April 2019 and March 2020, according to research by ElectricalDirect. The study revealed that stoves, toasters and stoves are the most likely to cause fires. Cooking appliances were responsible for 8,000 accidental fires in 2019/20, 53% of all appliance fires in England. Hot plates and toasters came second and third, causing 11% and 9% of fires, respectively. The most common causes of accidental appliance fires were placement of household appliances near heat sources, misuse of appliances, and reported malfunctions. Washing machines were responsible for a quarter (23%) of defective appliance fires. It is followed by rotary dryers (20%) and cookers (9%). Hotpoint devices caused the most malfunctions in 2019/20, and the data revealed that Hotpoint devices caused the most defective hardware fires in the past year, with 311 recorded in 2019/20. The vast majority of them were washing machines (112) and clothes dryers (105). The second brand mistaken for these dodgy devices is Indesit, 183 fires have been reported. The biggest offenders were dryers (69) and washing machines (67). Pico came in third place, and its wares caused 150 fires in 2019/20. Of these, the majority were washing machines (52) and clothes dryers (29), although dishwashers (27) and refrigerators / freezers (26) were not far away.
