Ask Ovia: What is UGR

0

The column where you can ask your lighting questions to Ovia’s Head of Lighting Mike Collins, and his team of technical experts. UGR is the standard for determining the level of disturbing glare for indoor applications. Annoying glare is a feeling of visual discomfort from a light source, its level is affected by factors such as: – lamp brightness (lumen output) – fixture height – number of lamps in an area / room / workspace – decoration of the area / room (room reflection) The best way to avoid discomfort From glare is to provide the luminaire with anti-glare properties. The anti-glare properties can range from controlling the direction of light emission to diffusion of light emission, and the glare performance will be calculated when the lamp is tested. UGR values range from 13 to 30. The lower the UGR value, the less discomfort. Guidance is provided on the maximum acceptable UGR values for specific applications. For example, the maximum UGR recommended for offices is UGR < 19. This directive can be found in BSEN12464-1 or the SLL Code for Lighting. The total UGR value can be determined when using lighting design software such as Relux. This is done simply by combining the glare performance of the lamp with the characteristics of the room. Calculation is done from a monitored location such as an office/workspace. We've seen a lot of demand for our range of Inceptor Slate TP(a) backlit plates. With a low air diffuser <19 UGR, it is suitable for a range of installations and work environments, featuring a pre-fitted, push-fit 3-pole flow connector for quick and easy installation Thanks to Jason Wood of AJ Electrical Services for this month's query.
