NAPIT Technical Development Engineer Richard Townsend provides details of the organization’s latest publication dedicated to initial, periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations. With the recent addition of NAPIT’s publications division, we felt it was time to make good use of all the experience, knowledge and understanding of our senior technical team so that we could provide some solid advice and guidance to the industry. To date, all of NAPIT’s publications have centered around its core business, namely site-based guidance for electricians (on-site solutions), periodic inspections (EICR Codebreakers and Landlord Private Rented Sector Guide), and Understanding Risk Assessments (Risk Management Blog for Practice). The only book missing from this list, Enforcement of what NAPIT stands for, is a definitive publication written with a specific purpose covering how to inspect and test an installation, either through initial verification or a periodic perspective. what’s new? The technical authors at NAPIT have put together a publication – A Guide to Initial Verification, Periodic Inspection and Electrical Installation Testing – that covers everything you need to know about how to perform a preliminary or periodic inspection and circuit testing. Back to Basics: What is the test equipment? The book goes into detail to explain all the separate pieces of the test equipment we use. This multi-function tester is often taken for granted, and we must not forget that individual test equipment was where it all started and is still very valuable now. Many electricians new to inspection and testing find it difficult to understand the different tests and tools that give the required measurements. The best way to approach this is to analyze every piece of test and test equipment it was used for – something that’s covered in the post in easy-to-read steps. Next steps: What are the tests? After the test device, the most difficult part of the testing process is understanding the different tests, when to apply them, and how to conduct them. The new manual provides an in-depth explanation of all individual pieces of test equipment required to comply with BS 7671, plus some important additions, or at least knowing how to use them. Along with the individual pieces of testing equipment, we also cover the most popular multifunctional mounting test instruments (MFTs) most popular in our industry today. There are also many different types of tests that BS 7671 requires, and we explain what all of them are, how to perform each and when to use them. Inspection time After explaining all the different tests and their test equipment parts, we need to take a look at the various inspections. Although we are technically examining before the test, we need to know the tests before we start, which is why we explained them first. There are two basic checks that must be performed before any test is conducted: 1. Initial Verification Examination 2. Periodic Examination The different examination schedules cover the two inspections, and although they are often similar, some clear differences need to be understood. All these differences and tables are dealt with in detail to give the user an in-depth understanding of the two scan types and how to implement them. Pre-screening and testing Before any inspection or test takes place, there are a few things we need to confirm for initial or periodic inspections. Initial verification is a completely different process from a league, as are the results and certifications / reports that are produced upon completion. We explain all these differences and the regulations that must be considered before starting any business. Especially when it comes to the periodic examination, the work that needs to be done before the examination and which test begins is very important and cannot be skipped. Since we all never stop learning, the new guide has been written to support those who are just getting started with inspections and testing, those who are undergoing any dedicated screening and testing courses, or for experienced inspectors or testers. Fully complies with BS 7671: 2018 + Amd 1 and is a “must-have” toolbook for any electrician.
