Do you need help deciphering EICR codes? The technical team at NAPIT, with the help of the 18th Edition Codebreakers, are answering your latest coding queries. Click on the pictures to take a closer look! Craig Dunn: This was found by the EICR for a housing association contract. When testing the continuity of the loop I was getting an open CPC to read and after further checking the other sockets I found that the connectors were completely rusted. Something often overlooked whether in design, installation, initial verification or periodic inspection is external influences. When I say “external influences”, I’m referring to those that are often overlooked because they are not considered a problem. External influences to be considered when designing and any inspection (especially periodic inspections) are the following effects: ● moisture ● steam ● dampness ● unexpected corrosive atmospheres If the installation is not treated with moisture, steam or moisture, this can occur Significant damage or harm to the integrity of the electrical installation. Most electricians in a coastal town will tell you that properties near the waterfront that may not have moisture problems will at some point show signs of corrosion through the salty air. In more serious cases, galvanized backboxes, ducts, and copper can be roughly dusted in a matter of months. Likewise, anyone who works around swimming pools, I’m sure, has broken down the accessories to find a pile of green dust, where copper conductors were once, due to the corrosive nature of the products used to keep pool water safe to swim inward. Although much of the metal containment we use is galvanized, it will not last long in certain conditions. Looking at the photo provided, it is clear that there is a wet issue of some sort, and the cpc has completely eroded. The other copper components of this electrical system will also need to be checked for integrity and continuity. Partial or full rewiring will likely be required, but from an EICR perspective, any report should specify that the environment will need to be considered. Particular attention to damp, moisture, ventilation and corrosive atmospheres will be required before selecting the type of wiring system and accessories for any remedial work.
