To bring a little bit of the happiest place on earth with us, we built this Mickey Mouse bed for mom. As a professional landscaper (in a past life), I wanted to make sure that this raised flower bed would be durable. This planter is constructed from landscaping stone blocks placed on a concrete base so that it is solid and will last for many years. Get detailed sinks and a list of materials in our printable project plans here. Dimensions of flower bed Mickey Mouse flower bed is 12 feet 0 “long, 10 feet 4 feet wide. The raised bed holds approximately 2 cubic yards of soil. The total area of the flower bed (to calculate the amount of flowers) is 60 square feet. We first planted about 90 flowers, then filled about 90 more to improve the color. How to Create a Concrete Base for a Stone Flower Bed Making your own plant pot, whether you’re a fan of Disney or not, is a great way to landscaping your gardens and adding oomph. No matter what shape flower bed or raised planter you are building, you can use the same process we showed in the video to give it a solid foundation. If you feel comfortable working with concrete, you can mix up the concrete foundation and pour it like we did for a fire pit a few years ago. Or if you use landscape blocks to build a planter along the edge of an already molded concrete slab (as we did with our retaining wall flower bed) – this works, too. How to build a retaining wall flower planter with pavers But for this raised Disney-themed planter, we used a quick-dry concrete mix to create a custom shaped flower bed. Using dry mix makes it easy to make a custom round shape, and also saves the pressure of working with mixed concrete (which we did a lot when we poured this entire yard on our own!) Watch the video to see how we laid the blocks with dry concrete. It’s a great trick to make a durable flower bed of any shape or size you want! How to Build a Round Flower Bed with Landscape Blocks Building your own flower bed using affordable landscape blocks as edging is a great way to add oomph to your home or create a welcoming, well-planned backyard area. Start with preparing the area. Use spray paint markers to mark the area, then dig up the lawn and level the soil. For a flower bed round, the rebar and rope trick I’m showing in the video helps you spot the perfect circle! Install a no-dig edge around the planter area. Apply a base layer of quick dry concrete mixture (as shown in the video). Place the first layer of the landscape block over the dry concrete mix. Place the second layer of landscape block on top of the first row, this will hold the blocks stable. If you need to split horizontal blocks, watch the video (approx 6:10) to see our easy method with a block chisel! When all the blocks are in the correct place, attach the second layer of blocks to the first layer using construction adhesive. Fill the spaces between the blocks with a more dry concrete mixture (as shown in the video). After allowing the daily building adhesive to set, spray the dry cement mixture with a spray nozzle until the mixture is completely moistened. Allow it to heal. Tips for growing a shaped flower bed If you want to emphasize the shape of your flower bed (like we did), plant shorter flowers the same height, and group them by color. To make the planter look really sparkling, we surrounded the planter with white flowers and filled the center with red. About a month after planting, we realized we needed more flowers. We added ours so they were diverging from half of the planting recommendation. Check the soil pH with a soil test kit before planting so that you can match your flowers to the soil and increase the soil as needed. Match your flowers to sun / shade, too. We planted in bright sunlight so we really blossomed with dark red and white spotted polka dots. After the summer annuals fade away, you can add mums or other fall plants to coordinate your fall landscape.
