EPDM is a commonly used roof covering, which is perfect for flat and slightly sloping roofs. EPDM foil has a service life of at least 40 years, and the foil is always applied fireproof. What do weather influences do to your roof?
It sounds logical, but you probably don’t always think about it consciously: a roof is always outside! A top offers protection to everything under this roof, but it suffers quite a bit. It is exposed to all conceivable influences from nature and the climate:
- Most roofing materials partially reflect UV radiation, but this radiation still causes a roof to “age”.
- Frost affects the protective layer of, for example, roof tiles or roof covering.
- A storm can cause the roof covering to move, or (heavy) objects can accidentally end up on the top coating, causing damage.
- Rain and moisture affect the roof, covering in both cold and warm conditions. If water remains on a top, it can lead to leaks.
During a year, all these weather influences usually pass by, and they all have their effect on your roof. We can say that a top has to endure the most extreme weather influences during the winter. It is, therefore, wise to check your roof entirely before each winter and then prepare your roof for winter.
What is the best way to prepare your roof for winter?
You can outsource the winterization of your roof, but you can also do a lot yourself! It saves you the costs of an external company, and it is too good to be aware of the condition of your roof yourself. We are happy to give you a step-by-step plan to prepare your roof for winter:
- Check whether all roof tiles and ridge tiles still fit together correctly and whether they are still in the right place. Storm and gusts of wind can cause them to move, and a small displacement can cause a leak in your roof. Do you have a flat roof? Then check that there is no damage or wear spots on the top covering.
- Check all lead flashes on the roof, at the skylights, roof cones and the chimney. When lead wears, weak spots form in the flashings, which can eventually lead to leaks.
- Free the entire roof of algae, moss and leaves. It is essential for both a flat and a sloping roof and certainly also with a tiled roof! Algae and moss on roof tiles retain moisture. This moisture freezes in the winter so that the top layer of your roof tiles or ridge frosts can come off. It can eventually lead to roof tiles breaking and a leak.
- Free all gutters and grilles from dirt such as moss, leaves and branches. This way, the rainwater that falls on your roof keeps a free passage and can leave your roof as quickly as possible. It prevents water from remaining on the top, which in turn can lead to leaks. Cleaning the gutters is advisable more often than once a year because leaves accumulate quickly, especially in the autumn.
Check all gutters and downspouts for any holes or cracks. Is there a leak somewhere? Repair it immediately to avoid worse damage.
